The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our freedom with family, friends, backyard barbecues, and, of course, fireworks. While fireworks are a cherished tradition, they also come with serious risks if not handled properly.

Each year, thousands of people are injured in fireworks-related accidents — most of which are preventable. At Collins & Collins, we care deeply about keeping our community safe. Here are some important fireworks safety tips to help ensure your holiday is memorable for the right reasons.

Fireworks Safety Tips

1. Leave It to the Pros

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional show. Not only are these displays bigger and more impressive — they’re also handled by trained experts who follow strict safety protocols.

2. If You Use Consumer Fireworks… Know the Rules

  • Check local laws — many cities have restrictions or bans on fireworks.

  • Only use legal fireworks labeled for consumer use.

  • Avoid homemade fireworks or illegal explosives.

3. Keep a Safe Distance

  • Light fireworks outdoors, away from people, homes, dry grass, and vehicles.

  • Maintain a safe radius — spectators should be well back from the launch site.

4. Supervise Children Closely

  • Never let young children handle fireworks — even sparklers can burn at over 1,200°F.

  • Older kids should only use fireworks under close, sober adult supervision.

5. Be Prepared for Emergencies

  • Keep a bucket of water, a hose, or a fire extinguisher nearby.

  • Fully soak spent fireworks and duds before disposing of them.

6. Use Common Sense

  • Never relight a “dud” firework — wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water.

  • Never aim fireworks at people, pets, vehicles, or structures.

  • Light one firework at a time, then move back quickly.

🚑

Common Fireworks Injuries Include:

  • Burns (hands, face, eyes)

  • Eye injuries from flying debris

  • Hand injuries and even amputations from explosive malfunctions

  • Fires caused by misfires landing on roofs, grass, or vehicles
